At 9AM on Saturday, November 3, 2001 members of the VYMA Chamber Orchestra arrived in the lobby of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion where they unpacked their instruments, tuned up and got ready to perform as part of the LA Philharmonic Symphonies for Youth pre-show event. This was the first VYMA performance of the season, and as the ensemble excitedly warmed up there were just a few nerves. But when those big Music Center doors opened at 10AM the group was ready to go! While Sam conducted and the ten young musicians played, hundreds of curious children crowded around, some sitting on the floor, right up close, some standing farther back with their parents, all clearly fascinated to see a group of real musicians who were not much older than themselves.

Afterward, the members of the Chamber Orchestra got to be audience for a while as they heard the Los Angeles Philharmonic play Prokofiev’s Cinderella Suite and watched members of the Aeolian Ballet Theatre perform the story in dance. It was a memorable first outing for VYMA.
